The government, through its strategic plan for preparation and response to COVID-19, in line with the guidelines of the Head of State and the directives of the World Health Organization, wanted to increase the country's capacity in the supply of and access to oxygen therapy.
The plant, located within the Kinshasa Provincial General Hospital (formerly Mama Yemo), was inaugurated on May 19, 2022, by the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene, and Prevention. In addition to Kinshasa, the other plants will be located in the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, Kongo-Central, and Haut-Katanga.

This project was financed to the tune of $3.2 million thanks to the support of the World Bank, through the Health System Development Program Management Unit (UG-PDSS), within the framework of the Covid-19 Emergency Project (PUARP-COVID 19).
These medical oxygen production plants have the capacity to produce approximately 53 50-liter cylinders per day at a pressure of 200 bars. They will not only cover the needs of Panzi Hospital, Kyeshero Medical Center, Charité Maternelle Hospital, Sendwe Hospital, Kinkanda Provincial Hospital, Ngaliema Hospital, Kinkole General Hospital and the Kinshasa Provincial General Hospital, but also other surrounding facilities. Oxygen is an essential input for ensuring the care of patients, particularly those in cardiorespiratory distress.
