The Federation of African National Insurance Companies (FANAF) is a professional association whose primary objective is to promote the creation of purely local insurance companies with fully or partially African capital. Its headquarters are located in Dakar, Senegal, and it had more than 203 member companies in 2022.
FANAF's priority mission is to promote the insurance and reinsurance sector in Africa and strengthen its market across the continent. FANAF aims to leverage microinsurance, agricultural insurance, and compulsory insurance to transform their potential into real business opportunities. Implementing microinsurance programs is essential to alleviate the burden on low-income populations.
Through reliable, affordable, and innovative agricultural microinsurance, farmers in the DRC could increase their yields and profits in the face of adverse weather conditions caused by climate change. Agricultural insurance will encourage farmers to produce more, thereby increasing their output and helping to reduce food insecurity in the DRC and across the continent. It's worth noting that with approximately 80 million hectares of unused arable land, the DRC could feed 3 billion people, almost three times the population of the African continent.
The main objective of these meetings was to increase the insurance penetration rate in Africa, to promote compulsory insurance in the Inter-African Conference on Insurance Markets zone, and to promote the contribution of reinsurance to making the insurance industry flourish.
On the institutional level, participants established a new executive board to defend the interests of the African insurance industry for the next three years. They also revised FANAF's statutes to improve the governance of its general secretariat.

To reinvent the insurance business of tomorrow, microinsurance, mandatory insurance, and agricultural insurance are the primary niches FANAF is working on to transform their potential into real business opportunities. In this dynamic, reinsurance players are key partners supporting the insurance industry in win-win relationships.
The DRC Finance Minister, Nicolas Kazadi, who was present at the meeting, expressed the wish that all stakeholders would now respect Congolese legislation by using local companies approved by ARCA to cover risks located in the DRC.
The process will effectively involve compliance with regulations, adherence to minimum rates, the presentation of suitable and appropriate products, and compliance with commitments, particularly through the diligent payment of benefits by insurance companies. To support growth, the aim is to increase the insurance penetration rate, in particular by creating products adapted to the needs of the population.
The 29 member countries of FANAF will meet in Mauritania in February 2024 for the 48th edition.
