– Hydroelectricity, an asset for industrial development
The DRC has significant potential for hydroelectric power generation. Thanks to the power of the Congo River, the second largest river in terms of flow, the country boasts an estimated hydroelectric potential of 100,000 MW, the highest in Africa.

Although Congolese energy currently has 99% of hydroelectric capacity, this resource, like others, remains underexploited. However, the Congo River, with its basin straddling the Equator, offers the DRC exploitable energy potential estimated at 100,000 MW, spread across 780 sites located in 145 territories and 76,000 villages. This represents approximately 37% of the total African potential and nearly 6% of the global potential. Despite the government's efforts to launch hydroelectric development programs and harness the power of the Congo Basin's many rivers, the current exploitation rate of these resources remains below 3%, demonstrating significant untapped opportunities.
Despite this potential, the mining industry alone has a gap of 700 MW and spent more than $600 million in 2020 importing electricity from neighboring countries.

To date, out of an installed capacity of approximately 2,677 MW, the production capacity in operation is approximately 1,130 MW, of which more than 90% are controlled by the National Electricity Company (SNEL), which is struggling to cover the needs of the country, whose service rate is 9%. This energy divide represents a bottleneck for the development of the mining sector and the economy as a whole.
The completion of work on the Kakobola hydroelectric power station is expected before the end of April 2023.
The government's commitment was confirmed with the recent liberalization of the electricity sector in 2020, thus opening the market in the areas of production, transmission, and distribution. A number of private operators are concentrated in mining areas where solvent demand is well quantified, such as Katanga, Kivu, Kinshasa, and Mbuji-Mayi, etc. In addition, the DRC's geostrategic position and the interconnections of its networks with SAPP (Zambia), EAPP (CPGL), and PEAC (Brazzaville) allow the export of its electricity to several countries. This is the vision behind the Grand-INGA dam project on the Congo River, 200 kilometers from Kinshasa.
